Type 608 is a pre-WOII Belgian railcar (autorail) of which six units were built.
The Belgian state railways SNCB studied various foreign designs, and eventually received several proposals from Belgian builders. SNCB decided on a design largely similar to a prototype that had been built before, in 1935 by Baume & Marpent, the railcar 606.01.
It was another company, however, that would build the type 608 railcars, FUF (Forges, Usines et Fonderies) based in Haine-St-Pierre.
The diesel engines came from the Belgian firm S.E.M. Gent, who had obtained a license from Ganz, the well-known Hungarian builder. SLM in Winterthur built the mechanical transmissions, which operated automatically. It had five main gears and an additional gear for the departure from standstill.
The six units were delivered by FUF in the summer of 1939. During the war, they were out of service. Four units were damaged by the partial collapse of a shed, but all were considered to be repairable. The repairs were given priority and were carried out by Baume & Marpent, and all units were back in service in 1945.
The railcars 608 served secondary lines in Belgium, primarily out of Brussels. It was only much later, in the 1960's, that the 608 would be moved to the poor agricultural area south of Charleroi. Their last services have been recorded in 1965. Five units were scrapped between 1967 and 1969.
608.05 was saved, but more than twenty years would pass before its restoration in the SNCB workshops would take off. It was restored to its original state with a two-tone green livery and a single headlight at each end. This unit now resides in the museum of Le Chemin de Fer à Vapeur des Trois Vallées in Treignes.
The Trainz version of the 608 represents the railcar in its final appearance, uniformly green and with double headlights.
It can be driven through a gearbox with five positions, much like the prototype. (The 'departure' mode has been left out, however.) Gears change automatically, both up and down, when the cab throttle is in the zero position.
The throttle has 20 (!) positions, which gives it an almost "continuous" feel. Hence, all in all there are 100 throttle positions, all different.
This has been accomplished through a new design (by the author) of the eight power curves in the "engine" asset, which allows effective interpolation for intermediate states of the throttle in the core of Trainz.
This design allows flexibility in the operation of the railcar. Three modes of operation are possible in Realistic Mode:
1. One-gear mode: the throttle operates over the whole speed range;
2. Quasi-realistic five-gear mode: each gear has a speed range from low to high, overlapping with lower and higher gears; the maximum speeds correspond to those of the prototype.
3. Precise mode with five gears: the five ranges offer strictly consecutive Trainz throttle settings, all 5 x 20 positions lead to different speeds and hence speed can be precisely controlled.
These settings are easily selected through switches in the cab, when the cab throttle is in its zero position, even when the train is running.
To start the train from the cab in Driver - Realistic Mode: touch the "cab control" button and then the "engine start/stop" switch.
Engines can also be started from the UI by means of the pantograph icon. In AI mode, the commands HP Start Engine and HP Stop Engine will work.
With engines running, there is a separate sound (and smoke) system for DCC-dial control, which is also used by the Trainz AI.

The diesel railcar (autorail in French) of class 670 was the last in a line of series, some very small, of streamlined multiple-unit diesel trains. The development was stimulated by the successful application of diesel streamliners as long-distance trains in the neighboring countries, France, Germany and The Netherlands. The development had only hardly begun with the first sets of two-car class 651 and 652.0 built in 1934 and later series 652.1 (two-car, later 620), 653.0 and 654 (three-car) built around 1938, when it was seriously interrupted by WWII.
Based on the experiences so far, some changes in the design were made, which led to notable differences between class 670 and the earlier models. The common bogeys between the cars were gone; each car rests on its own two bogeys. This improved the riding quality and made maintenance a lot easier. Furthermore, the intermediate coach was longer and the engine units were shorter than in their predecessors, in order to offer more passenger space free of the noise and vibrations of the engines.
Six units were built and initially delivered as class 653.1. In WWII, the set 653.12 lost one engine unit. The other five sets were either undamaged or underwent repairs; they would receive the numbers 670.01, 670.03, 670.04, 670.05, and 670.06. Set 653.15 had to be rebuilt with different engines due to a shortage of parts, however, and it actually received the number 671.01. After a fire during service that destroyed two cars of the 670.03, the two idling cars of 653.12 were combined with the remaining engine car of 670.03 and the mixed set received the number 670.02. After a revision of 671.01 in 1961, in which it received the original type of engines from a 653.0 set taken out of service, it was accidentally renumbered 670.03 instead of 670.05!
The trains have done their services out of Brussels South, out of Ronet and out of Kortrijk. In 1964-1965, when they were based at Kortrijk, they even served Tourcoing in France.
The railcars ended their service in 1965-1966.
The Trainz model has the livery that corresponds to the final appearance of the trains, with two headlights and painted a single tone of green.
Each of the seven numbers that have appeared on the real engine cars can be made to appear on the front and in the cab by means of the Edit Details menu in Surveyor 2 or through the '?' option within the Trains foldout in Surveyor Classic.
The engines can be started by means of the pantograph icon on the user interface in DCC and Realistic Mode, or with the driver command HP Start Engines.
A separate video is supplied to demonstrate how to turn a cab into the control cab, start the engines and drive the train from the cab in Realistic Mode.
The throttle has 10 positions which are accessed in two sets of five positions, corresponding to the action of either one or both of the two torque converters of the hydraulic transmission.
The TELOC speed instrument has a small button on the top, which will RESET the script (and stop the train).
